Vandals Hit Fresno County Peace Officers Memorial, Reward Offered
By Erik Rosales
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) — The Fresno County Peace Officers' Memorial in downtown Fresno's Courthouse Park is all cleaned up right now, after vandals tagged it with spray paint. Law enforcement believes it was the work of gang members. A worker with the company that installed the memorial did his best to remove all the spray paint. He got some help from a volunteer, a man who said he heard about the vandalism and wanted to come out. But this act of vandalism hit directly into the hearts of the family members who lost law enforcement officers over the years. Leon Isaac's son, Jeff was a Fresno County Sheriff's Deputy. He was killed in a car accident while on duty. Isaac says, "We are coming up on 17 years in September and to me it feels like just yesterday." Isaac's garage is lined with mementos honoring Jeff's life and the services he gave to the community. Isaac says, "I'm comforted by the fact that I can come into my garage. I have a sign in my back yard in remembrance of Jeff, happy thoughts good thoughts." In September of 1997, thousands of officers from across the state came to Fresno to pay their respects to the fallen deputy. Isaac says the memorial in Courthouse Park is special to him and his family. It's a place where the survivors of fallen officers can visit and remember their loved ones. He hopes others would give respect to these fallen officers, respect that they each deserve. Isaac says, "The 57 names on the memorial are no longer here so they really can't defend themselves, and they were protecting and serving and let's honor memory and not show disrespect." A reward of one-thousand dollars is now being offered for information leading to the arrest of the people responsible. Anyone with information on the case is urge to call Crimestoppers at 559-498-STOP.
