Parolee With Gun Arrested Outside Big Fresno Fair
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) —
With more than half a million people expected to come out to the Big Fresno Fair this year, Fresno police and security officers have their hands full, keeping an eye on the crowds and making sure families stay safe.
The extra eyes paid off this weekend. A parolee with a gun was spotted and arrested - less than 100 feet away from the fair gates.
"We try to keep that element outside the fair," said Sgt. David Gibeault with the Fresno Police Department.
Saturday night police pulled over a car just outside the gates of the fair after recognizing a parolee, Trelane Bell.
Police say they found a stolen gun underneath the front seat.
Bell was taken to jail.
"Plenty of police officers around here, plenty of them," said Anita Smith, who brought her family to the fair.
Reuniting lost kids with their parents is one of the officers' most important tasks.
On busy days, like the weekends, there are around 100 officers and security guards inside the fairgrounds and about 40 officers outside - looking for gang members and other potentially violent criminals.
Elizabeth Thornburg took her grandchildren to the fair Sunday and says the only thing she's worried about are kids getting separated from their parents.
"Every time I turn around I saw another officer or two. I probably wouldn't be here after midnight," said Thornburg.
The Big Fresno Fair runs through Sunday, October 14th.
