A break in an irrigation canal sent water gushing Sunday afternoon onto a valley roadway-- and put homeowners on alert.
It happened in Alta Irrigation District canal in the area of Highway 180 and Frankwood, around 6:30 p.m.
Irrigation district workers say a 20-foot section of an irrigation canal had breached, sending a 200-foot-wide path of water across Highway 180.
Firefighters say the water got knee-high.
Five homes were affected, and some people were forced to leave.
Irrigation workers capped the source of the water at Avocado Lake, and are still not sure what caused the breach.
They plan to begin repairs tomorrow.
