Central seeking 1st Valley football title

Central Seeking 1st Football Valley Title Friday night in Fresno against the Bakersfield Drillers

Valley high school football is back the air Friday night on our sister station, The CW59!

It's all part of the Les Schwab Tires Friday Night Rivals presented by Lithia Subaru.

This week's matchup is the Central High Grizzlies taking on the Bakersfield Drillers in the Division One Valley Championship game in Fresno.

As FOX26 Sports Reporter Nick King explains, the Grizzlies are on the verge of making school history.

The 2016 season began pretty inauspiciously for Central, losing 24-3 to Bullard. This, after the Grizzlies spent the summer talking about making school history.

Grizzlies head football coach, Kyle Biggs said, We were a very over-confident group. And that humbled us very much."

11 consecutive and convincing wins later, history is here for the taking.

94 years after Central opened its doors, 86 years after the first Grizzlies football team, this group could be the school's first Valley champions.

Central senior defensive lineman Sam Satele said, "We talk about history a lot. Because we know this community, they didn't get much from the Central football team."

Senior wide receiver Malik White said, "86 years, 86 teams didn't do it. It's just really crazy. That's before I was born, before my mom was born, before anyone else in my family was born."

Central has a sensational sophomore quarterback in Trent Tompkins, and plenty of talent surrounding him.

Since being kept out of the end zone in the season opener, they've averaged 40 points per game.

But ask first-year Coach Kyle Biggs what doesn't get talked about enough, and it's a quick response: "Our defensive line. Our defensive line is phenomenal. They do their job, they get to the ball and they wreak havoc on quarterbacks," said Coach Biggs.

Sam Satele, cousin of former NFL lineman Samson Satele said, "You gotta be physical, you gotta be a nasty person in the trenches."

If you can't make it to the game, make sure you watch it at 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 18th on The CW59.

If you do make it to the game, upload your photos and videos and we might use them on the FOX26 10 o'clock News!
