Engine Parts Fall Off Plane, Into Fresno Neighborhood

An airplane{}helping in firefighting efforts at the fire near Dunlap was forced to{}make an emergency landing Sunday afternoon, after experiencing engine failure-- and losing pieces over homes.{}

The Erickson Aero DC-9 Tanker{}had departed the Fresno Airport around 3:30 p.m. Sunday when, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and Fresno Firefighters, the pilot reported a left engine failure.{}

Shortly after, families in a neighborhood near Ashlan and Highway 168 said{}they heard a boom.

"The dogs went crazy. I thought somebody was banging on the door," says Jeannette Sanders. "Everyone was on the street, looking at debris."{}

Pieces of the plane's engine fell into the{}neighborhood. At least one piece shattered Sanders' windshield.{}

The plane returned to the airport moments later.

The U.S. Forest Service, which had contracted the plane, says the plane had been making retardant drops earlier in the day.{}

Two people were on board. No one was hurt.{}

The FAA will be sending an investigator Monday.{}
