A woman in her 40's is shot and killed by a Fresno Police officer, after Chief Jerry Dyer says she came at officers holding an eight-inch knife.

The shooting happened around 3:30 Friday afternoon at an apartment complex in the El Dorado Park neighborhood.

The apartment is on San Bruno and 4th Street, near Fresno State.

Chief Dyer says officers were responding to a domestic violence call, and entered an apartment.

Police say officers were confronted by a woman with a knife. But they say she refused to drop it.

Dyer says one officer had a Taser and tried to stop the woman. But the officer said it appeared to have no effect.

He says the woman then tried to attack the officers.

Dyer says, "Based on her bizarre behavior she either is dealing with mental health issues or possibility under the influence of some sort of drug."

Dyer says after the shooting, officers attempted CPR and first aid on the woman.

Police say prior to this incident, in February police dealt with the same woman acting erratically at different location in Fresno.

Dyer says, "The officers did detain her and she was removed from the streets that evening."

Dyer says the toxicology test results will determine whether or not she was under the influence of anything.
