One person is dead after a driver crashed into a dry canal in San Joaquin, the California Highway Patrol said.
The 51-year-old woman, whose name is being withheld pending the notification of her next of kin, was headed southbound on San Benito Road sometime in the early evening or nighttime hours before losing control of her 2000 Ford Mustang.
Car went off of a shoulder into a dry canal before overturning, the CHP said.
The woman died at the scene. A 6-year-old boy who was in the passenger seat sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, the CHP said.
The accident was not discovered until about 5:45 a.m.
Officers do not know if alcohol or drugs factored into the crash.
