      Four Killed In Central Valley Train Accident

      Highway patrol officers say four people were killed after their car stopped on railroad tracks near Fowler and struck by a freight train Monday morning.

      The car had five people inside when it was hit by the Union Pacific freight train at Jefferson Avenue and Golden State Boulevard around 1:45 a.m.

      The train was traveling about 40 miles per hour, the California Highway Patrol said. Highway patrol officers also said the train's engineer sounded the train's horn to warn approaching traffic.

      The front of the train crashed into the left side of the car. The train came to a stop a quarter of a mile from the crash, the CHP said.

      One person was ejected from the car and died. Two others were killed inside the car, officers said. The 20-year-old driver later died at Community Regional Medical Center. And an 18-year-old woman was transported to the hospital with major injuries, the CHP said.

      The names of the victims have been withheld pending the notification of next of kin.{}
