      Colorful Foods Fight Disease

      Add some color to your next meal. It could help you fight disease and boost your health. Turns out that following the rainbow can help ward off disease.

      Frances Largeman-Roth, author of "Eating In Color" says, "Plants contain different pigments, and those pigments help to protect the plant and they also help to protect us."

      Largeman-Roth is also a registered dietitian and says watermelon is one of the best fruits in the red family. It can help fight cancer because it's high in lycopene which is most profound for lung cancer, stomach cancer, and prostate cancer.

      To boost your immune system, eat something orange. Mangos are filled with antioxidants. Here's a simple recipe: "Coco Mango Smoothie" includes mangos, coconut butter, lime juice and turmeric.

      Remember the color, yellow. Lemons can protect you and brighten up any dish. It's rich in vitamin c and bioflavonoids which are important for fending off chronic disease, including cancer and heart disease.

      You can keep your eyes in check with greens. Mustard greens are loaded with glucosin and zeaxanthin, which are two nutrients that are

      important for eye health, and show to help reduce the risk of Macular Degeneration.

      Blueberries are good for a snack or for breakfast, but you can also use them in a salsa to pack in the benefits. Largeman-Roth says, "The polyphenols that are found in blueberries have been shown to reduce age related declines in cognitive and motor function."

      It's recommended we eat four to five colors a day - for our health.
