Student Drinking Death: Fresno State Frat Shut Down

The Theta Chi National Fraternity has informed Fresno State that it has revoked the charter for its Fresno chapter following a student's alcohol-related death.

Philip Dhanens, an 18-year-old Fresno State freshman from Bakersfield, died September 2, two days after drinking alcohol at the fraternity's off-campus house.

The Fresno County Coroner's Office said Dhanens' blood-alcohol level was 0.36 at the time of his death and that an autopsy determined he had swelling of the brain as a result of his alcohol consumption.

Fresno Police continue to investigate this case.

Fresno State placed the local Theta Chi chapter on interim suspension in early September pending receipt of the police investigation report.

The national Theta Chi organization also placed the local chapter on suspension after Dhanens' death.
