Road Closed: Stretch Of Shaw Ave. Shut Down Until Saturday
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) —
A crew working on a telecommunications line early Friday morning forced the closure of a major northeast Fresno street, bringing the morning commute to a standstill.
Shaw Avenue will be closed from First Street to Sixth Street after contractors working for Sacramento-based Atazz Technical Services punctured a six-inch steel gas line while digging around 3 a.m.
Pacific Gas and Electric spokesman Denny Boyles said the contractors did not "properly notify the 'call before you dig' service and did not follow proper procedures during their digging."
Officials say that repairs could last into Friday night or until Saturday morning.
More than 300 businesses and apartments had to be evacuated because of the gas leak.
Officials continue to keep tabs on Tioga Middle School, which is about a block south of Shaw Avenue near the gas leak.
Boyles said gas will continue to flow until about 8 p.m.
