Man Punches Cop In Face, Fresno Police Say
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) —
A man is under arrest, accused of assaulting a Fresno police officer and causing some tense moments for workers at a convenience store.
Police say shortly after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, a man told them that Roberto Ruiz attacked him in Southeast Fresno and then took off.
Officers found Ruiz walking toward a convenience store at Tulare and Cedar.
When he spotted officers, they say he ran into the store, closed the door and began punching and kicking the windows.
Police say store employees were trapped inside with no way out during the incident.
Officers eventually forced the door open. That's when they say he punched one of the officers in the face.
Officers were able to force Ruiz to the ground and take him into custody.
Ruiz was booked into the Fresno County Jail. He faces several charges including assault on a peace officer.
Police say Ruiz is mentally ill and already on parole for assaulting another peace officer.
The officer who was injured was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and released a short time later.
