Police say Cruz Venegas was driving around with a loaded sawed off shotgun, drugs and his two kids were inside the vehicle.
They say he stopped at a liquor store near Maple and McKinley Tuesday night and he got into a fight with a 17-year-old girl who was also in the car.
Venegas reached under the seat to pull the gun out and it went off.
The shotgun was loaded with birdshot and struck him in the hand and hit his son in the lower leg.
Venegas originally told officers he was shot by someone he didn't know.
Venegas is a convicted felon in possession of a firearm as well as meth, marijuana and a liquid believed to be a controlled substance.
He faces multiple charges after he gets out of the hospital.
