Valley fireplaces could be dark more often this winter.
A plan released by the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District would increase the number of no-burn days for fireplaces.
Wood burning heaters and outdoor devices would be exempt from the rule.
The effort is part of a plan to reduce air pollution in the region.
According to the American Lung Association's 2012 "State of the Air" report, Bakersfield, Fresno and Hanford are among to most polluted cities in the country.
