A gang member who shot himself in the ankle with a stolen handgun was arrested by police on Monday.
Police say 33-year-old Christopher Gutierrez was dropped off at Community Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his ankle.
Gutierrez told emergency room personnel he was shot by gang members near the intersection of Blackstone and Clinton avenues, police said.
However, detectives found that the gunshot injury was self-inflicted.
Police say Gutierrez eventually admitted he had accidentally shot himself with a stolen .357 revolver that was later recovered at a residence in Calwa.
Gutierrez, an ex-convict, was placed into the Fresno County Jail on numerous gun-related charges and a felony warrant.
