Student Shot Down; Accused Killer Arrested
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) —
Police have arrested the person they believe is responsible for shooting and killing an Edison High School student in Northwest Fresno.
Fresno Police say 18-year-old Marquis Sutton was shot inside an apartment at Ashlan and Marks avenues around 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Emergency crews rushed him to the hospital, where he died.
During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer identified the accused gunman as 20-year-old Terrance Lee, of Fresno.
According to Chief Dyer, Lee was with Sutton and three other people inside an apartment Monday evening, when he grabbed a revolver and emptied all the rounds, but put one back in. The chief said Lee closed the cylinder, spun it, then pointed the gun at Sutton and pulled the trigger. No rounds were fired.
Dyer said Lee then spun the cylinder again and fired at Sutton as he walked away. Sutton was shot in the back.
Dyer said Lee and another person dragged Sutton to the sidewalk and ordered others to tell police that a drive-by shooting had just occurred.
Lee was arrested at his mother's home in Northwest Fresno.
Sutton's brother, Vincent Andrew, spoke to KMPH late Monday night and said his other brother was shot and killed just this past June.
"I just don't understand what's going on out here. He was a good kid, never been arrested. No crime, anything. I don't know. I don't know. I just pray that we all get together. I'm tired of it. That's why I changed my life," Andrew said.
Sutton was on the football team at Edison High School.
The Fresno Unified School District issued the following statement:
"We are deeply saddened by the news that an Edison High student was senselessly killed this evening. This is not only a tragedy to the students and staff of Edison High and the Fresno Unified family, but also the entire community. We will have crisis psychologists at Edison to serve the needs of our students and staff. We express our deepest condolences to his family."
