Fresno County Ag Has A New #1: Almonds!

The Fresno County Department of Agriculture is reporting almonds have become the county's newest billion dollar crop.

Almonds produced a total gross value of over $1.1 billion, replacing grapes as the new number one crop.

Grapes held the top spot for the past 11 years, and still produced over $1 billion in 2013.

The total gross value for Fresno County agricultural commodities in 2013 was nearly $6.5 billion.

While this is good news, growers are struggling to make it because of the ongoing drought, which is also causing some to not be planted and is causing prices to climb.

The average cost of farm production in California is the highest in the country and is more then 2 1/2 times the national average.
