Two Visalia police officers are recovering after being shot by 25-year-old Luis Avilez.
The shooting happened around one o'clock Thursday afternoon in the area of Stover and Douglas in northeast Visalia.
Cell phone video, given exclusively to KMPH News captured by a witness shows Visalia police reacting to the gunfire.
Seconds after the gun fire stops, officers quickly put a fellow officer in the back of a car and rushed him to the hospital
Police say Visalia's gang officers were patrolling the area when they spotted two men acting suspicious.
Officers say 18-year-old Phillip Marquez complied to their demands. But the other, 25-year old Luis Avilez took off running.
Police say Avilez hid inside a house and ambushed the officers as they entered the home.
Officers returned fire.
Witness Jason Turner says, "The black charger, unmarked, came flying down here. It left some black marks right here. Was doin' at least 100 down here. And apparently that was the officer that was in critical condition. Another officer put him in the back of his patrol car and rushed him to the ER. Just started flooding, the cops. I mean, there was at least 100 cops. "
Police say one officer was hit in the torso, underwent surgery, and is in serious but stable condition.
The other was hit in the shoulder.
Both are expected to survive.
As for the suspect - Avilez was hit as well, no word on his condition.
Visalia's Police Chief calls the actions of the officers courageous.
