Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter said, "Our guys were embarrassed by 9-4. They were embarrassed by the bowl game," and later added, "That's one of our mantras this year. 9-4 is not good enough. Not for this team."
DeRuyter also repeatedly talked about his guys "ignoring the noise" - something he says they did not do last Fall heading in to the bowl game in Hawaii. In that game, SMU beat the Bulldogs by 33 points, and DeRuyter points to too much listening about how good they were after a 9-3 regular season record and tri-conference championship.
Ultimately though, DeRuyter and his offensive and defensive coordinators believe this team does have an edge to it, and is out to back up the preseason vote of confidence that picked them as the West division winner.
